Introduction/ Biography: Born on April 22, 1963, in Grenoble, France, Fashion Designer Catherine Malandrino began her success of a career in Paris and then took over in New York. She first worked in the houses of Emanuel Ungaro, Louis Feraud, and at Et Vous. She made her entrance in America in 1998, as Diane Von Furstenberg's head designer. Malandrino's label is described as the energy of Manhattan and the romance of Paris as many people describe her collections. Catherine Malandrino has become a face that embodies femininity and strength. She started
her own labels which are The Catherine Malandrino Collection and The Catherine Malandrino Limited Edition. She now designs wholesale and it is distributed in Neiman Marcus. Some of her clients consist of Sarah Jessica Parker, Hale Berry, and many more. Her clients all have a sense of independence which is what Malandrino portrays. To Malandrino individuality is at the heart of fashion; no women should look the same because no one is alike. Catherine's American- flag dress put her on the map and she later became a virtual household name after serving as a judge on Project Runway and having her store and having her store and designs featured prominently on Sex and the City.
Malandrino has changed the fashion landscape for the young and hip. Her designs showcase the boundaries between a woman's soft feminine side and her cutting edge wit; she has blazed a tremendous path. “I want to bring softness and refinement to an urban, feminine wardrobe and to help the woman show her character and individuality through her unique clothes.” - Catherine Malandrino. She is very well known for her innovative draping skills. Her designs display femininity and they inspire women's individuality. She was inspired by Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, and Madeleine Vionnet’s style. She also gained a lot of new knowledge from the couture houses that she worked in before starting her own label. Her designs are described as chic, feminine, and they have a recognizable silhouette. Malandrino has similar concepts of empowering women as well as Chanel, Lanvin, and Vionnet. Since Malandrino was small she was inspired by the way that Chanel liberated women by proposing a new wardrobe. That is when she realized that clothes have inner power too. Silhouettes, neck lines, and anything that has to do with the garment all can change the way people think or live. She then made it a goal to change and empower woman in her designs. Catherine Malandrino is a fashion icon because she has dedicated herself to empowering women and stepping out of her box and designing everything from her American flag collection to inspiration from the Amish community. She is a role model to many women not just by her gorgeous, sexy designs but because she helps women feel beautiful.
Her American Flag collection was inspired by The American Dream. She launched this collection in 2001 which was coincidently the same year 9/11 happened which caused a lot of trauma. The concept was loosely fitting dresses combined with jagged T-shirts that were inspired by the Stars and Stripes.
